The Advent 5431 isn’t the most cutting-edge laptop around but it’s ideally suited as a machine for the first time, or casual, user. With its high-gloss and imprint design, this is a good-looking machine. The 15.4-inch screen is a great compromise between portability and function. The screen has a standard, for this price, resolution of 1280 X 800 pixels, so images look fine. We found it a crisp and sharp screen to view. Graphics are integrated, so you won’t be able to play games but it’s quick enough for watching DVDs, using the built-in DVD rewriter. The screen also allows for a good-sized keyboard. The keys have a large and square shape to them, making it less likely to mis-strike keys when typing. Sadly, we found the keyboard to be the weakest part of this machine, as the keys tend to rattle at you type. If you’re a casual user you won’t find this a problem but it’s not ideal for long typing sessions. We managed to get less than two hours from the battery, which isn’t ideal but with an overall weight of 2.7kg, you’ll be able to carry this laptop between rooms in your home without too much hassle. For a budget laptop you’ll find it has a reasonable specification, powered by the Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor T3200, which clocks in at 2GHz. This is a mid-performance chip but as there are two processing cores, you’ll be able to handle multiple tasks at the same time. You may want to consider opting for a memory grade at the time of purchase, as the 1024MB it ships with is a little mean, especially when you discover that it ships with Windows Vista Home Premium OS, which can be power hungry at the best of times. The 120GB hard drive is sufficient, and offers plenty of space for programs and files. Verdict The Advent 5431 is a decent machine for the price. It has a solid design and while the keyboard isn’t as versatile as we’d have liked, it offers up great performance for the surprisingly low asking price.
